Washington Shines on Both Sides
Sneakers Plus Athlete of the Week
Wall senior running and defensive back Maurice Washington has been on a mission in his final season at Wall High School. That mission is to make the state playoffs, something the Knights haven’t done since 2007.
Washington is paving the road to a playoff appearance. He has rushed for 292 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in his last two games. Against Freehold on Saturday Washington scored what turned out to be the game winning touchdown, and his two interceptions in the fourth quarter helped preserve the win.
Washington comes from an athletic family. His father played football in high school and he has been playing football since he was eight.
“Since I was little my dad always installed football in me,” said Washington on what drew him to the game. “My older cousin wanted me to play. That’s all we did outside was play football. And I grew to love it.” Washington has played other sports as well.
“I did swimming, I might do it again this year,” said Washington of the other sports he has dabbled in. “I did track sophomore year but last year I just lifted, conditioning my body for football which is where my focus has been.”
Washington has his eyes on the future, hoping to play at the highest level he can in college.
“I would love to try and see what I could do Division I,” said Washington of his college aspirations. “I want to shoot for the stars, never cut myself short. I feel like I can definitely compete and play. I want to play defense in college and I want to major in business administration.”
When not playing football Washington enjoys watching movies, his favorite being Friday. His favorite actor is Denzel Washington.
